History of race: The race was first run in 1864, just three years after the first Melbourne Cup, and won by Falcon. A race with a troubled history with the race not being held in 1870/71, then in 1885 the South Australian Government decided to declaring gambling in the state illegal. Nominations for the Adelaide Cup were already accepted so organisers held the meeting at Flemington in Melbourne, where the race was won by Lord Wilton. Racing in South Australia was then abandoned entirely until 1889, when then totalisator was re-introduced. Until 1944 the race was over 13 furlongs (approx 2600m) and since then has been over 2 miles (3200m). Originally run in May, in 2006 it was moved to the second Monday in March.
Adelaide Cup - Melb/Sydney Cup Double: Gallic 2007 (Syd. Cup), Subzero 1992 (Melb. Cup.)
Lead Up Form Races: Roy Higgins Quality, Mornington Cup, Lord Reims Stakes.
The Track: a generous course with wide sweeping turns, generally very fair. Racing is in an anti-clockwise direction.
Morphettville : The original outer track which has a circumference of 2307m and a home straight of 340m.
Parks: the second track at Morphettville, opened in 2009. Circumference of 2100 metres and a width of 25 metres with the finishing straight 305 metres. This track features a 1400m chute which was unavailable on the original track.
Track Bias, Barriers: This race held on the main track. The 3200m start is positioned just before the turn into the home straight. There is little bias due to the distance involved, but it is generally preferred to start from an inside gate.
