The Race: one of the main features of Randwick's Autumn Carnival Champions series, The Queen Elizabeth Stakes is a WFA event over 2000m run under similar conditions to the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley in mid October. The race has always been attractive to horses who might also be targeted to the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup during the Melbourne Spring Carnival.
Famous Winners: Archer won this race in 1862 (between his two Melbourne Cups) and the Barb (Melbourne & Sydney Cup 1866) won it in 1869. Tulloch won it 3 times (1958, 60, 61) and in more recent times Veandercross 1993, Doriemus 1996, Might & Power 1998, Lonhro 2003, More Joyous 2012. Winx scored her 17th consecutive win here in 2017, her 25th in 2018 and ran her last race in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 2019 recording her 33rd unbeaten start.
Best race form indicators: Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate, Melbourne Cup, Ranvet, Doncaster, Chipping Norton, George Ryder, Canterbury Stakes.
Time: 2000m track record at Randwick 2:00:30 Hampton Court
Track Bias: the 2000m start is situated on the course proper just past the winning post. Fields are restricted to 14 and inside barriers are an advantage as the rail is usually moved out for the second week of racing at this track.
