History: The Bletchingly Stakes was first run as an 1100m Listed race in 1994 and became Group 3 in 1997. The distance was increased to 1200m in 2004. It is usually held in the first week of August and is the first Group Race of the season, in 2010 in was held on the last weekend in July. For some it marks the unofficial start of the Melbourne Spring Carnival. While many quality horses in this race are coming off a spell and heading for the Liston or the Memsie, some are still finishing off their winter campaigns and as a consequence are hard fit. It is regarded as a good indicator for the coming group races with many winners and placegetters going on to find Spring Carnival glory.
Past Winners: Poetic King (1994), Blazing Reality (1997), Rubitano (2002), Super Elegant (2003), Le Zagaletta (2004), Regal Roller (2005), Apache Cat (2007), Shoot Out (2010).
Lead Up Form: Many runners will be coming off a spell but winners of The Healey Stakes (Eagle Farm, end of June) have completed this double and Super Elegant went on from this race to win the Liston (now PB Lawrence Stakes) in 2003.
Time: Track record for Caulfield 1200m is 1:07.74 (Miss Andretti)
Track Bias, Barriers: The rail is normally out around 3 metres but this has little effect on the pattern of racing. The long straight run from the 1200m start gives a chance to every horse but it pays to start well and be in the leading division by the final corner as the final straight is short and the winning post comes up quickly.
Weight & Statistics: under WFA conditions, most winners to date have been male horses carrying 57kgs or 58kgs.
