History: The Caulfield Guineas was first run in 1881 and won by Wheatear. It is usually run mid October one week before the Caulfield Cup. It is one of Australia’s iconic races, unchanged in name and distance 1 mile (1600m) and in earlier days was contested by both sexes. The 3yr old fillies now tend to go for the Thousand Guineas which is run on the following Wednesday during the Caulfield Spring Racing Carnival. The last filly to win this race was Surround in 1976, she went on to win the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley 2 weeks later (and remains the only filly to do so.) The Guineas has uncovered many of our most exciting performers, placegetters in the race have become some of the best known and valuable stallions. The 2009 winner Starspangledbanner has won Group races both in Australia and the United Kingdom and was sold to commence his new job at stud for the sum of $10,000,000.

Derby, Australian Derby), Weekend Hussler 2007 (Emirates , Oakleigh Plate), Starspangledbanner 2009 (beat So You Think and Manhattan Rain who went on to Quinella the Cox Plate, then he went on to win the Golden Jubilee at Ascot and the July Cupat Newmarket 2010)

Lead Up Form Races: Guineas Prelude, Stutt Stakes, Golden Rose.
Track Bias, Barriers: The 1600m start is at the beginning of the back straight giving all horses a chance to get ready for the first turn and another long straight brings the field up to the final turn into the straight. The rail is normally in the true position and Caulfield races fairly under these conditions, however statistics show that horses drawn inside barrier 8 have more wins than those drawn wide.
Race Statistics: Any filly contesting this race must be freakishly talented to stand a chance, look for colts/geldings who appear capable of running the mile and have fast finishing sectionals.
