The Tancred Stakes
Date: March 2020 (TBC)
Conditions: Open Weight for Age.
2019 Winner: Avilius
The Race: First run in 1963 as the H.E. Tancred Stakes, from 1995 to 2002 it was the Mercedes Classic, then the BMW before gaining a new sponsor in KIA in 2018. While it is a prestigious and valuable race it can also be a key form race to some of the major Spring Carnival races in Melbourne. Winners include Kingston Town, Bonecrusher and Might and Power who, after winning Caulfield Cup and the Melbourne Cup in 1997, went on to win the Doomben Cup, the Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Cox Plate in the same year.
Lead up Form: Australian Cup, Apollo, Chipping Norton, St George. The Ranvet Stakes usually offers the best form guide for this event with more than half of the last ten winners starting in that race.
Time: Track record at the Rosehill 1500m is 1.27:21 (Shindig)
Support Races: Tulloch Stakes, Vinery Stud, Emancipation Stakes.
The Track: Because of the distance involved barrier draw is of little importance. Although the track generally favours on pacers, it is possible to finish on from behind the leaders if the track is on the better side of Soft.
