History: The race was first run in 1973 as the Kennedy Stakes and has gone through many name changes on its way to becoming the Coolmore Classic. Originally a Group 2 it was elevated to Group 1 in 1984. This race together with the Ranvet on the same day is the first Group 1 race since the Golden Rose which happens in August. In recent times some of our best fillies have come through this race with Sunline the most impressive performer to date. She won the Coolmore and the All Aged Stakes in 2000 and 2002, the 1999 and 2000 Cox Plate, the Hong Kong Mile and the Manikato in 2000 and the Waikato Sprint in 2001 and 2002.
Past Winners: Emancipation 1984 (also George Ryder & All Aged Stakes), Sunline 2000 & 2002, Typhoon Tracy 2009 (Tristarc & Myer Classic).
Time: Track record at the Rosehill 1500m is 1.27:21
The Track: Rosehill is a tight turning track and the 1500 start is in the back straight with a short run to the first of two turns with a fairly short straight between them. The horses drawn well in who can race on pace will be suited as the final straight is also fairly short and doesn’t give much time for backmarkers to make ground.
Track Bias, Barriers: Rail True will tend to favour horses that can lead or race on pace and an inside draw will help. Track conditions and rail movement can tend to exaggerate the effects.
Weight, Statistics: Generally middle weights prevail carrying around 53 to 55kgs but Sunline won twice carrying 60kgs so rate the horses ability and weight on the day.
