Flemington Sat. 10/11/18. Prices from Sportsbet on Friday.
Race 5 Queen Elizabeth Stakes Group 3 2500m.
Gallic Chieftain ($7.5) was 4th in the Hotham and last win on a Soft track in the Warrnambool Cup following a win at this track and trip, include. Jaameh ($4.8) was 3rd in the Hotham and placed here at 2 previous starts, ready for another win? Northwest Passage ($13) ran 2nd in the Geelong Cup then 8th in the Hotham, 4th behind Jaameh in the Bart Cummings but races on the pace and could hang on for a place. Midterm ($6) gets blinkers on, led and placed at Caulfield then not far from the winner in the Metropolitan.
Race 6 Matriarch Stakes Group 2 Mares 2000m.
Savvy Coup ($8) was outclassed in the Cox Plate, much better placed here back to mares company. Kenedna ($9.5) can be hard to follow but does seem to go better when taken up to this trip, will have support. Aqua D’ivina ($7.5) has done enough to finish in the top 2 in 7 career starts, can’t leave out of calculations. Miss Siska ($16) longer trip appears to suit and can go forward early, has an each-way show. Our Libretto ($9) has been unbeaten in 4 runs since arriving here, narrow winner last start but hard to knock winning form.
Race 7 VRC Classic Spring Group 1 WFA 1200m.
Hard to tip against the Everest winner Redzel ($4) freshened and won a recent trial. Brave Smash ($14) is the Manikato winner but was almost 7 lengths away when Redzel was winning the Everest? OK that was on a Heavy track so maybe can improve here on a dry track. Redkirk Warrior ($12) didn’t fire on his UK trip, if he’s taken no harm from that experience looks suited back here at his home track but would like to see him go around before committing a lot to him. Spirit Of Valour ($11) was 2nd in the Manikato, this is his first go on one of our larger tracks and can be competitive again. It’s hard to say if the last 2 runs of US Navy Flag ($13) are a true reflection of his ability, maybe the straight track here will bring improvement?
Race 8 Mackinnon Stakes Group 1 WFA 2000m.
Prized Icon ($21) goes well at this track and is a winner up to 2500m, not the worst and value on an each-way basis. Blair House ($1.95) is a hot favourite who has placed 4 at this trip, won’t be taking the short odds but include in all the exotics. Latrobe ($5.5) is a top class import, winner of the Irish Derby and 2nd in the St Leger, better odds on offer and I will back as the winner. Shillelagh ($7.5) backs up from a win in mares grade last Saturday and has been competitive against open class, distance the only question. Vic. Derby winner Extra Brut ($11) also returns on the back-up, well weighted in this and well worth an each-way ticket.
Have a good weekend, happy punting.
