Race History: The race now named the Emirates Stakes was first run in 1919 and won by Chal. It was called the Cantala Stakes until 1961, then known as The George Adams Handicap until 1988 when it changed again and had another 4 sponsors before becoming the Emirates in 1998. Originally run over a mile and changing to 1600 metres with the conversion to metric distance. It is the last Group Race of the Flemington Melbourne Cup Carnival and is run on the Saturday after the Melbourne Cup. Coming as it does near the end of the calender year, it is viewed as a good form race for many horses who have gone on to have great results in the following year.
Past Winners: Divine Madonna (2006), Scenic Peak (2002), Testa Rossa (2000), Shaftesbury Avenue (1990), Better Loosen Up (1989), Gunsynd (1971), Aquanita (1960 &1961.)
Time: Track record for the Flemington 1600m is 1:33.49 (Scenic Peak in this race in 2002)
Support Races: Patinack Farm Classic, Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
Track Bias, Barriers: The 1600m start is in a chute with only a short run to the big sweeping curve leading into the long final straight. Inside barriers are an advantage as the rail is usually out approximately 8 metres after three days of racing at this track during Melbourne Cup week.
Weight Statistics: Under handicap conditions this race has been won by horses carrying high and low weights. Can be a suitable race for horses who have previously been racing at WFA.
