History: The Epsom Handicap was first run in 1865 over a mile (8 furlongs, approx. 1600 metres) and was won by Dundee. Records show the following year the race resulted in a dead-heat so Bracelet & Rapidan had a 2-horse run off to decide the winner (Rapidan). Dundee officially came 3rd despite only running half as far as the other two. In 1924 the winner was Blackadder, a grandson of Wallace winner of the Sydney Cup 1896 who was son of the mighty Carbine (winner of the 1890 Melbourne and Sydney Cups and one of Australia’s greatest racehorse and sires). Gunsynd ‘The Goondiwindi Grey’ won the 1971 Epsom along with a handful of other group races and then went on the following year to win more Group races including the Cox Plate.

The Track: The 1600m start is located in a chute off the back straight. Long run before the first turn, inside barriers have a slight advantage. They can race very wide in the home straight in search of the best going, but this can often leave an opening on the inside rail that can be taken advantage of with a smart ride
