The Race: Statistics in this race date back to 1903 when the first winner was Cressy and the race was run over six furlongs. From the 1940’s to the mid 70’s it was mainly known as the Railway Quality Handicap. With a distance of 1500m, it is a popular choice for many sprint-mile specialists and regarded as one of the key lead up races for the Doncaster Handicap at Randwick in April, although only a handful of horses have run the double in the same year. There have also been a few winners who have returned to win the race two years in a row including Lonhro, Manikato & Winx, who returned in 2019 for a fourth win, her second to last start.

Lead Up Form: Can be won by a horse who is resuming from a spell, the Canterbury Stakes has provided many winners of the George Ryder, other prominent form lines can include the Chipping Norton & Australian Cup.
Time: Track record Rosehill 1500m 1.27.21 (Shindig).
The Track: The 1500m start at Rosehill is in a small chute and the end of the back straight. Usually a fair start but the on pace runners will have more of an advantage when the rail is out. Majority of winners start inside barrier 11.
Weight Statistics: Under WFA conditions there has been a reasonable spread of higher weighted older horses and 3yo’s on the minimum to greet the judge. Not a race that favours the fillies, the last filly to win was Heat Of The Moment in 1986 but champion mare Winx won in 2016 and again in 2017.
