Race History: First run in 1955 over the Imperial measured distance of 5 furlongs until metrication came in, then measured as 1000m from 1973. Some exceptional horses have won the race in recent years and we have seen four go on to race at Ascot in the United Kingdom: Choisir, Takeover Target, Scenic Blast and the talented Miss Andretti who is the only horse to win this race at Moonee Valley (it was run there while Flemington was refurbished in 2007). She left a sizzling 57.22 seconds track record for Moonee Valley, later in the same year did the same at Royal Ascot running another track record in the King’s Stand. In 2011 the phenomenal undefeated mare Black Caviar streeted her opposition in the Lightning, her ninth consecutive win.
Time: Track record for 1000m at Flemington is 55.50 Special.

The Track: Flemington is racing headquarters in Victoria, a spacious track with sweeping turns and a long home straight. Most runners will have their chance, even when the rail is out.
Track Bias, Barriers: The 1000m start is in a chute at the beginning of the final straight and give all runners a chance because the race is a straight run with no corners. In large fields it is common to see the field split to both the inside and outside areas of the course.
