Race History: The race was first run in 1869 and was known as the Melbourne Stakes until 1936. Trainers with horses already qualified to run in the Melbourne Cup will often run in the Mackinnon as the Weight for Age Conditions mean they will not be handicapped at higher weight for a win, and the first three horses across the line are exempt from being balloted out of the Melbourne Cup. Many famous racehorses, including the likes of Rain Lover and Phar Lap, have won The Mackinnon- Melbourne Cup Double. In 1877 the race was won by Robinson Crusoe so named because he was the sole equine survivor of a famous shipwreck in 1876 in which all the other horses bound for the Melbourne Cup had been lost. The Track: Flemington is racing headquarters in Victoria, a spacious track with sweeping turns and a long home straight. Most runners will have their chance, as the rail is usually in the True position for this meeting.
Track Bias, Barriers: The 2000m start is situated on the right hand side of the course, past the turn after the winning post. There is a long straight run until the first corner, barriers are of little importance. Difficult to lead all the way given the WFA conditions in this race and the long home straight.
