The Race: First run in 1968 the race was known as the Freeway Stakes but after Manikato’s second win 1982 it was renamed for him in 1984. It began as a listed Race, became Group 2 in 1979 and has been Group 1 since 1989.
Past Champion Winners: Vain (1969), Manikato (1979 & 1982), Strawberry Road (1983), Rubiton (1987), Dane Ripper (1998), Redoute’s Choice (1999), Sunline (2000), Miss Andretti (2006), Gold Edition (2007).
Lead Up Form: In recent times the McEwen Stakes and Gilgair Stakes have become one of the best Melbourne form races for the Manikato. Sydney form races include the Missile Stakes, Concorde Stakes and Premiere Stakes.
Time: Track record for the 1200m at Moonee Valley is 1:09.29 (Miss Andretti in this race 2006.)
Track Bias, Barriers: The Manikato Stakes meeting is now held the Friday night before Saturday's Cox Plate. The rail is usually True or out a few metres and there is little bias evident - although racing on pace is always an advantage at this course, particularly in the sprint races such as this one.
