Race History: The Newmarket Handicap is one of our longest established races having first been run in 1874. An open race with all ages 3yr + and both sexes it is often a good indicator to future high performers. Some of the early winners of the race were able to keep on extending their distances from the six furlongs right up to staying distance as in the case of Malua 1884 who also won the Oakleigh Plate, The Adelaide Cup and the Melbourne Cup in the same year. In 1888 he also won the Grand National Hurdle while he was already into his stud career having sired Malvolio from the mare Madcap, whose sire was the famous Robinson Crusoe of ‘Shipwreck’ fame. Malvolio won the Melbourne Cup in 1891. Another famous horse to win the Newmarket was Ajax in 1938. Winner of the Futurity in 1937, the Newmarket was the third consecutive win of what would be a racing and punting sensation. Ajax went on to win 18 races in a row and by the end was to run in the Rawson Plate at the short price of 40 to1 on in a 3 horse race. He got beaten and became the shortest priced favourite to get rolled in Australian racing history. In more recent times the race has uncovered some superb sprint to middle distance horses and perhaps they give away horse passports with the trophy because winning the Newmarket very often precedes a trip to the U.K. to try their luck at Ascot. In 2011 the phenomenal undefeated mare Black Caviar won the Newmarket Hcp with an official margin of 3 lengths, her tenth consecutive win.

The Track: Flemington is racing headquarters in Victoria, this race is run down the 'Straight Six" and the rail is usually True. All runners will have their chance.
