History: First run in 1910 as a 7 furlong Principal (listed) race by 1948 it was run over 10 furlongs, remaining at that distance until 1973 when it became 2000 metres. In 1980 status was upgraded to Group 1. Many 3yo horses coming through this race have gone on to future success, most notable Tie The Knot who in 1998 won the Sydney Cup and the Underwood in the same year and then The Sydney Cup again in 1999, the BMW 1999 & 2000 and the Chipping Norton 4 times 1999 to 2002, the Ranvet Stakes 2000 & 2001 and being named Australian Champion Stayer of 2000. There is a good record of winners and placers doing well in the AJC Australian Derby which follows in 2 weeks.
Lead Up Form: Randwick Guineas, Canterbury Guineas
Time: Track record at the Rosehill 2000m is 1:59.99 held by Danewin & Octagonal.
The Track: The 2000m start is in a chute on the left of the course and gives all horses a chance to take a position before the first of 3 turns. On this fairly tight turning track leading or on pace can be an advantage. Backmarkers have to start their runs before they have finished the final turn which sends them wide and makes the dash up the short final straight tough.
Track Bias, Barriers: Most winners come from inside barrier 11 racing on pace or leading.
Weight Statistics: As a 3yr old open with set weights there are other options at this time of year for fillies so not many will contest this race. Could be why no filly has won since Spirit of Kingston in 1985.
Associated Races: Sydney Cup | George Ryder | Queen Elizabeth Stakes | Randwick Guineas | Golden Slipper | Doncaster
