Sandown Racecourse, located in Melbourne's outer eastern suburb of Springvale, is the only thoroughbred racecourse in Australia to carry the name of a sponsor, currently known as Sportingbet Park. Sandown is also a permanent motor racing track hosting V8 supercars events.
There are two courses at Sandown, the Lakeside track is positioned inside the Hillside circuit. Re-opened after renovations in Feb. 2014, this course is now regarded as one of Australia's best.
Scratchings for racing at Sandown Hillside & Lakeside will be updated here by 10am on race day.
Sandown Racecourse Map & Barriers Guide:
Circumference of Hillside track is 2087m with 491m in the straight, Lakeside is 1857m with a straight run to the winning post of 407m. The majority of meetings at this track are run on Wednesdays.
Characteristics: a wide course with a steep rise in the home straight to the winning post. Racing is in an anti-clockwise direction.
Lakeside: when the track is rated Good and the rail is True it is possible for runners to lead all the way. When the rail is out it is difficult to lead, winners will be running on. Can be badly affected by wet weather with the worst ground being near the inside rail, forcing runners to head wide in the home straight.
Hillside: The larger of the two courses and generally very fair. Horses will be finishing on late when the rail is out 5 metres or more.
Sandown Barriers Starting Positions:
1000m (Hillside): Starts in a chute at the back of the course with a straight run of 500m to the home straight. Barriers are of little importance.
1200m (Lakeside): Located on the back straight of the course proper, two sharp turns before entering the home straight. Inside barriers are an advantage in larger fields.
1400m (Hillside & Lakeside): Situated on the back straight, there is little bias from this start on the Hillside track. On Lakeside there is a shorter straight to the first turn and inside barriers have an advantage.
1600m (Lakeside) & 1800m (Hillside): Begins in a chute off the back of the home straight. With a long straight run down the back of the course to the first turn, barriers are of little consequence.
2100m (Lakeside) & 2200m (Hillside): Starts in the home straight in front of the grandstand with a run of approx. 400m before the first turn. Inside barriers are a slight advantage.
2400m (Hillside & Lakeside): Starts at the top of the home straight. Long before the first turn, barriers are of little importance.
