History: First run in 1881 over 8 furlongs (approx 1600m). During the war years 1940 to1943 the Army took over Caulfield Racecourse, so the race was run at Flemington – as was the Caulfield Cup. Considered an important lead up to the Spring Carnival races, although the last winner to achieve the Toorak-Caulfield Cup double was Leilani in 1974. Can be a good guide to the 1600m Emirates Stakes on the final Saturday of Flemington Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Toorak-Caulfield Cup Double: The Trump 1937, Royal Gem 1946, Galilee 1966 (Caulfield Cup & Melbourne Cup), Tobin Bronze 1967 (Caulfield Cup & Cox Plate), Leilani 1974.
Lead Up Form: The P B Lawrence (Liston) Stakes & Memsie Stakes are considered the best lead-up races for the Toorak Handicap.
Time: Track record for the 1600m at Caulfield is 1:34.28 (Fields of Omagh)
Track Bias, Barriers: The 1600m start is at the beginning of the back straight giving all horses a chance to get ready for the first turn and another long straight brings the field up to the final turn into the straight. The rail is normally in the true position and Caulfield races fairly under these conditions, however statistics show that horses drawn inside barrier 8 have more wins than those drawn wide.
Weight & Statistics: While there have been some exceptional highly weighted horses to win this race it is more common for them to place behind the lighter weighted contenders of both sexes carrying 55kg or less.
