Race History: One of the key days of Spring Carnival lead up races being held two weeks before the Group One Caulfield Cup over 2400m, known as Melbourne Cup Preview Day. 1948 to 1970 the race was 12 furlongs (2400m) and up to 1963 was run under handicap conditions, then became a Group 2 WFA. A starting point for many horses that go on to shine in the Spring Carnival, after Makybe Diva won this race in 2005 then followed with wins in the Cox Plate and the Melbourne Cup it was lifted to Group 1 status with Set Weight conditions. Due to a schedule clash with the AFL Grand Final, the Turnbull race meeting was held on Sunday in 2010 and will be again in 2011, with the first race being scheduled for 10.30am to relieve traffic pressure from the nearby showgrounds during the Melbourne Show. The Track: Flemington is a spacious track with sweeping turns & long home straight. Most runners have their chance, even when the rail is out.
Track Bias, Barriers: The 2000m start is situated on the right hand side of the course, past the turn after the winning post. Long straight run until the first corner, however an inside draw is as advantage as the rail is usually out approx. 9 metres. Difficult to lead all the way given the Set Weight conditions in this race and the long home straight.
