History: From 1924 to 1948 distance was mainly over a mile, from 1954 to 1993 it was run over 2000m changing to 1800m in 1993 until now. During the war years Caulfield was used by the Army so the races were transferred to Mooney Valley or Flemington. The Underwood has been won by many of the most famous horses in Australia and this race has often been a step on the way to the Cox Plate for such stars as Phar Lap, Tobin Bronze, Octagonal & Northerly.

Lead Up Form: The Memsie Stakes in late August (1400m, Caulfield) is regarded as one of the best lead-up races for the Underwood. The Naturalism Stakes is run on Underwood Stakes day, an important race as it can qualify horses for the Caulfield Cup in October.
Time: Track record for 1800m at Caulfield is 1:47.19 (Cent Home)
Track Bias, Barriers: The rail usually returns to the True position having been a long way out at the previous meeting at this track three weeks earlier. For this reason, there is little bias to report and most runners will have their chance.
Weight & Statistics: in recent times the lightest weight carried to win was by the mare Tristarc with 54.5kg in 1985, since then 57-59kgs has been the average weight carrried to victory.
