The Race: First run in 1925 over 12 furlongs as the William Reid Stakes, from 1996 the race was known as the Australian Stakes then reverted to the William Reid Stakes in 2010. Group 1 since 1987, from 2005-2007 it was the second leg of the Global Sprint Challenge, (with the Lightning Stakes being the first leg and the King’s Stand the third, all three races won by Miss Andretti in 2007). Black Caviar won her 24th race from 24 starts in this race March 2013.
Lead Up Form: The Lightning Stakes (Now the Black Caviar Lightning) has often seen horses go on to either the Newmarket Hcp or this race with great success.
Track Record: Track record for the 1200m at Moonee Valley is 1:09.29 (Miss Andretti in the Manikato Stakes 2006.)
Track Bias, Barriers: The William Reid Stakes meeting is a night racing event and the rail is usually True or out a few metres. Moonee Valley is a track for specialists and racing on pace is always an advantage at this course, particularly in the short and middle distance events.
Weight & Statistics: a WFA showcase for Australia's top sprinters, both males and females have had their share of success but the key is simply to be the fastest.
